Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Concordia College Archives?
The Concordia College Archives is a collecting repository that preserves and makes accessible institutional records of enduring value as well as gathering collections with research and local historical value even if unrelated to Concordia.

Where is the Concordia College Archives located?
The Archives is located in the Carl B. Ylvisaker Library on the west end of the fourth floor.

What are the hours of operation?
The Archives is open 9am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday and by appointment during the academic year and 9am to 1pm Monday-Friday and by appointment in the summer. The Archives is closed Saturday-Sunday year round.

How do I contact the Archives?
Patrons wishing to contact the Archives may call 218-299-3241 or email [email protected]. To speak with Allison Bundy, College Archivist, call 218-299-3180 or email [email protected].

What materials are found in the Archives?
The Archives houses a number of materials to assist with research queries and projects:
  • Concordia publications
  • Manuscripts and documents
  • Scrapbooks
  • Photographs
  • Media
  • Artifacts
  • Oral history interviews
  • Church histories
  • Clipping files
  • Rare books

How do I use the Archives?
While we have lists of resources and some databases available for researchers to being surveying our collections, not all materials are searchable online. The friendly and knowledgeable Archives staff is eager to assist with providing the resources for your research. Please visit or contact us for assistance.

How is the Archives organized?
The Archives arranges its primary documents chronologically under broad subject headings.  Paper documents are kept separately from photographs, artifacts and other media.  Many records are not on open shelves; however, publications, programs, and photographs are types of items that patrons may browse through.  The Archivist and Archives staff are available and willing to help find research material.

Are all collections open to the public?
The Archives does exercise restrictions on certain collections, such as student records and presidential papers. These collections are restricted for legal, privacy, and copyright reasons or by donor request. Most collections, however, are open to the public for inquiry.

May I make copies of materials?
The Concordia College Archives provides copies of archival material for personal research. All duplication is subject to approval by the Archives staff. Materials will not be copied if the staff determines that it may harm the original, is prohibited in the donor agreement, or if it does not comply with copyright laws.

May I donate materials to the Archives?
Yes! The Archives actively seeks donations; however, the College Archivist reserves the right to decline a donation based on several factors, including but not limited to: collection relevance, condition of material, and manageability. Donors are required to sign a certificate of gift that acknowledges their donation and transfers copyright and property rights to the Concordia College Archives upon a receipt for the material and the donor signing a certificate of gift.

How do I cite archival materials?
All users are expected to respect the integrity of archival materials. To do so, the following information should be included in all citations: title and date of the item, file name, identification of location (which includes the name and numbers of record groups, series, and subseries in which the information is located), and repository name. More information can be found under Citing Archival Materials.

The following example is a citation for Concordia College Faculty Senate minutes:

Concordia College Faculty Senate minutes, 23 February 1980. Faculty Senate minutes, 1980-1981. Academic Affairs, Record Group 4; Faculty committees, Series 5; Faculty Senate, Subseries 1. Concordia College Archives.
